12 concerned MEPs from across the political spectrum addressed the European Commission regarding the transnational consequences of rule of law violations in Poland, particularly their impact on individuals facing politically motivated prosecutions and financial exclusion.
Polish businesspeople such as Przemysław Krych, Piotr Osiecki, Maciej Witucki, Leszek Czarnecki, Bartosz Kramek and Cezary Kucharski were among the most prominent figures targeted by the Law and Justice government. The MEPs believe that the criminal cases initiated against them and their broader ramifications still require a thorough and independent audit by Prokuratura Krajowa.
They’re calling for an urgent EU policy review on transnational financial repression and the inclusion of these cases in the upcoming Rule of Law Report. European entrepreneurs and businesses must be protected from malicious prosecution, state-sponsored smear campaigns, extortion attempts and the weaponisation of AML/CFT laws.
“Following the change of government at the end of 2023, the process of restoring the rule of law and European values in Poland has begun. Dealing with the prosecution service, politicised by the previous government, remains one of the primary challenges in that regard.”
