A senior Metropolitan Police officer has issued a direct public appeal to an Ethiopian asylum seeker who was mistakenly released from prison. Commander James Conway is seeking the immediate surrender of Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, who was wrongly freed from HMP Chelmsford.

Conway revealed that Kebatu has undertaken extensive travel across London since his Friday release and appears to have financial resources available. The asylum seeker made his initial escape by train from Chelmsford station, departing at 12:42pm and arriving at Stratford station at 1:12pm.

Police Track Movements

"Mr Kebatu was released wearing a prison issued grey tracksuit and holding a clear plastic bag containing his possessions," Conway stated. "He has since made a number of train journeys across the London area."

Police believe Kebatu has actively sought help from members of the public and approached railway station staff in both Chelmsford and London. Conway appealed for anyone who has assisted Kebatu to contact authorities immediately, urging the public to call 999 if they spot him.

Direct Appeal Made

In a personal message to the missing man, Conway emphasised safety as the priority. "We want to locate you in a safe and controlled way," he said directly to Kebatu.

"You had already indicated a desire to return to Ethiopia when speaking to immigration staff, the best outcome for you is to make contact directly with us by either calling 999 or reporting yourself to a police station," Conway added.
